Jah Prince spends his time between Atlanta and Jamaica
working in the music industry, and was the only full-blood
Jamaican nominee in the 2007 category for ‘Best Reggae
Mixed Tape DJ’. Known for his easy vibe, personable
character, and excellent selecting, Jah Prince was born
to spin and has been doing so since he was 16 years
old. Working on-air at 88.5fm working with Changez Disco
and then 89.3fm Atlanta radio in the early 90s allowed
him to craft the skills of playing live. There has never
been a day he didn’t help reggae music, even if behind
the scenes, so after 7 years of event production and
investment, Prince formed ‘Sunsplash Media’. As a selector,
Jah Prince has played at venues all over the USA and
travels to Jamaica at least 6 times a year for various
reggae shows. For 2008 he will be working with top artists
like Half Pint, Cherine Anderson, Kris Kelly, Chip Fu,
Tessanne Chin, Hawkeye, Luciano, Mikey General, Tifa,
Timberlee, Assassin, Tippa Irie (UK), Pressure (V.I.),
Gailann (TnT), Lady Flame (JA), Queen Ifrica, Sadiki,
Sizzla, Da’Ville, Spragga Benz and many others.
Prince had the pleasure of working Grammy Winning
artist ‘Dwele’ thru Atlanta-based label, Smokin Needles
Records. Working with longtime supporter ‘Phife Dawg’
of A Tribe Called Quest on several projects with Riddim
Kidz, allowed him to take another step into the production
arena. Alongside his labelmate DJ Rasta Root (Rane-Scratch
Live, L-R-G Clothing, Red Bull Music Academy), DJ
Fudge and DJ Solomon the crew has held down ‘Face-Off
Friday’. Face Off is Atlanta’s most consistent intercultural
monthly party, a place where only the best genres
of music plays without having patrons listen to the
‘Radio-Norm’. Currently working with Cooyah Clothing
(www.cooyah.com) and assisting in the launch of Cooyah
Bottled Water (www.cooyahwater) and Cooyah Music (www.myspace.com/cooyahmusic)
to offer cd-mixes along with the clothing orders,
the Caribbean, European and UK, Jah Prince’s fan base
has grown significantly. Fans preview mixed music
from various producers, hear concerts snippets and
artist interviews all by searching for ‘JahPrince’
on www.iTunes.com. (subscribe to the Podcast and can
listen all day/night on you iFone or iPod)
When questioned on his views at a recent Bob Marley
Tribute in Atlanta, Jah Prince said “I am thrilled
being nominated among such good selectors for the
passion of work that I do everyday and an honor to
be nominated at a show which showcases mixtapes worldwide
which are oftentimes overlooked.” He also added, “People
(club djs/radio hosts/selectors) just need to stay
in deh lane, because not everybody can get solid forwards
inna clash or be the best inna dance(hall) if it’s
not in them… It’s like their personality don’t suit
the position they’re in and they just can’t turn-on
that switch. …(as for me)… I play REGGAE for all types
of people and I really do LIVE Dancehall everyday
in my life… on the phone, emailing, texting (laughing),
it’s just what I do”.
For the 2nd half of 2008, JahPrince will release
7cds sponsored by many different friends in the industry
so be on the look out for 'Summer Reggae' and 'Summer
Dancehall' in Mid July.
